first ever TV performance on Jalandhar Doordarshan where he sang Dil Da Mamla hai, which catapulted him overnight to a household name.

1982:
first performance on the international stage. When he toured Canada, England, and America. At this point, none of the Punjabi singers were performing overseas.
1985:
sings one of the greatest Punjabi song of all time titled Challa, music for which was produced by the legendary Jagjit Singh. This song, which was used in the movie Long da Lishkara, depicts Maan as the ethereal ascetic, a jogi. Something Gurdas Maan is in his real life. This song catapulted him to cult status.
1990:
Produced Pop time, which featured singing talents from across India. This was the first time Indian music videos were seen on National television. 1993:
received “Tam Patra” for his outstanding contribution for taking Punjabi music across states by the Governor of Uttar Pradesh.
1997:
received the title of “Punjab Ratna” by the then honorable PRIME MINISTER Mr I.K. Gujral.
1997:
becomes the first and the only Punjabi Artist to have performed at the Madison Square Garden in New York.
1998:
his album Apna Punjab hove wins the ‘best album’ at the Asian Pop and media awards held in Birmingham, UK.
1998:
becomes the first Punjabi artist to perform at the PNE coliseum in Vancouver to a crowd of 16000 people and has been performing there alternate years since.
1999:
First Indian solo artist to perform to a sell out concert at Wembley arena, to a crowd of over 12000 people, and has been performing there alternate years since.
2004:
received the special mention jury award for the best actor for the film Des Hoya Pardes at the National film awards by the PRESIDENT OF INDIA.

2006:
received the critics award for the best actor at the Berlin Asia film festival held in Germany for the film ‘Warris Shah.’
2006:
receives the national award from the PRESIDENT OF INDIA for the Best Male Playback Singer for Waris Shah - Ishq Daa Waaris for building the entire narrative through his singing of HEER.
2009:
wins the ‘best international album’ award at the prestigious UK Asian Music Awards for the album Boot Polishan.
2010:
became the first Indian artist to be made an honorary member of an English premiership league soccer team, and was honored at half time of the premiership game on the field.
2010:
was awarded the honorary doctorate in Music by the University of Wolverhampton in recognition of his contribution to bring Punjabi music to the global stage.
2011:
First Punjabi solo artist to perform at the Royal Albert Hall, and the first Indian solo artist to perform two days consecutively to a sold out house at the Royal Albert hall.
2011:
Received the title of “Kohinoor of Punjab” by the Music and entertainment Industry of Punjab.
2011:
the first Punjabi artist to be invited by the Rt Honorable Prime minister Mr David Cameron for Lunch to commend him and discuss the betterment of the NRI’s in the UK.

2012:
Receives the Phalke award by the Dadasaheb Phalke academy
2013:
awarded the honorary doctorate in Punjabi literature by the Punjab University for his contribution to Punjabi literature through his songs.
2013:
sells out the Wembley arena and the LG arena during his concert tour to England.
2013:
sells out his Canadian tour across 8 cities in Canada, 33 years after making his debut.
